The best candidates expect flexibility. Show them what you offer.

Most roles can flex in some way, but adverts rarely say how. When candidates can’t tell whether a role will work for them, the best ones move on to an employer who is clearer.

A role flex code puts what a role can offer into four numbers, so candidates can see whether it fits before they apply.

How it works

  1. Answer four questions about a role Describe what the role could accommodate, not just how it works today.
  2. Get your role flex code Plus advert text, a downloadable statement, and a note of what’s limiting who can apply.
  3. Share it Add the code or QR to your advert so candidates can check it against their own.

What a role flex code does for you

Say exactly what a role offers

“Flexible working available” can mean almost anything. A role flex code spells it out for working pattern, hours, location and schedule.

Reach people who would otherwise scroll past

Candidates can check your role against their own flex code straight away, and apply knowing it could work.

See what’s limiting who can apply

The review shows which part of the role is tightest, and who it would open up to if that part moved up one level.

What a role flex code looks like

Example role flex code 3 3 2 2

Working pattern Variable by agreement Level 3
Total hours Part-time hours Level 3
Location Hybrid, fixed attendance Level 2
Schedule Employer-controlled, advance notice Level 2

Not decided on one part yet? Say so. It shows as a question mark, and candidates are asked to check it with you.

How to use your role flex code

  • Put it in your job advert Copy the ready-made advert text. It lists what the role offers and links to a page where candidates can check it against their own code.
  • Add the badge or QR code Use them on your careers page, job adverts or email signature. Both lead to a page explaining what the role can offer.
  • Share the role statement Download the role flexibility statement as a PDF for hiring managers and recruiters.
  • Review roles when things change Run the review again for an existing role, or when your needs change. It takes about 5 minutes per role.

You describe the role, not a person. Only state what the role can genuinely sustain. A role flex code isn’t a response to a flexible working request.
